andrea amelung

Andrea Amelung is dedicated to the experimental process of painting in a profound and expressive way. Her style is contemporary abstract expressionist and addresses local conditions, global developments (NoPLANetB - Rust & Patina), environmental issues, natural forces (4 Elements - Pigment Works), beauty (Gold Works), transience and decay (Stone Dust Works).
Andrea is deeply devoted to the experimentation of process. She has developed a special method that incorporates a variety of mediums to produce intense color effects that shimmer and radiate from the canvas. Amelung is a traveler at heart with extended stays in many locales around the world. These experiences have served her well as an artist, collecting ideas, materials and skills along the way. She has studied and painted in various artist studios, masterclasses and workshops, efforts that have broadened her understanding of experimental processes and the practice of painting as a whole. The extraordinary results of her diligent efforts are easy to discern.
Her achievements with texture produce a weathered  time-tested appearance to the application of paint. Other works are approached with graduations of a particular hue, to allow for the richest expression of the dominant color. Geometric forms and gestural lines are scrawled into or on the top of the paint, evoking both modern and ancient art forms. Amelung uses pure pigments in combination with unusual painting media such as plastic, sand, ash and marble dust. Her superb layering effects are also achieved by applying washes of beeswax and then scraping sections to reveal the layers below, providing a potent sense of texture and depth. Amelung has exhibited and sold to private collectors worldwide.

Since 2020 she has been working on mosaic sculptures made of stones or concrete and large mobilees, made of metal or fluorescent acrylic glass rings.

The artist lives and works in Berlin and Spain.

Exhibition: The next exhibition with vernissage is on 13.12.24, 18-21 o'clock at the MUSE Palma de Mallorca, General Ricardo Ortega 48, 07006 Palma

THE INFINITE DEPTH OF THE OCEAN - A TRIBUTE TO THE POWER OF THE COLOUR BLUE

This abstract artworks reflect the power and depth of the sea. With intense shades of blue, created through the use of acrylic and pigments, a vibrant texture is created that captures the dynamic contrasts and play of light on the surface. The layers in the image create an atmosphere of depth and infinity, while the movement and energy that run through the work are reminiscent of the vastness of the ocean. This compositions express the infinite possibilities of the colour blue and give any room a powerful yet calming presence.

VIBRANCY IN BRIGHT RED In my red series I experimented with acrylic and pigments to create a visual experience of intense passion and energy. The bright reds and dynamic shades symbolize a world full of vitality, movement and emotion. The bold neon red is a statement that brightens up the room while giving it a deep, emotional atmosphere. The abstraction makes the work powerful and energetic, but also invites reflection and immersion in an expressive, inner world. It brings life and movement to any room, with a dynamic that changes depending on the incidence of light, always revealing new facets.

Stone Flour Works – Structure and Dynamics in Haptic Art

The stone flour works are created by a variety of mixing techniques that combine chalk, sand, marble dust and other stone flours. These materials are applied in multiple layers to give each work a unique tactile texture and a sense of depth. The grain and colour nuances of the sand and stone powder used give each picture an individual touch and invite the viewer to explore the surfaces with their fingers. Depending on light and sunlight, living shadows are created that wander over the works and give them dynamism and life.

The artist obtains the stone flours from Carrara or from sculptor friends, who provide her with the stone flour produced during the processing of her sculptures. In this large-format painting, champagne chalk and marble dust were applied to canvas. The works are often crisscrossed by wires that are both incorporated and visible. The wires have been repeatedly treated with water to create rust, which, much like the wandering shadows, adds life and character to the work. This creates a fascinating combination of structure and movement that attracts the eye of the beholder again and again.

    Rust & Patina

NOPLANetB – AN ARTISTIC REFLECTION ON THE TRANSIENCE OF OUR PLANET

The works in the NoPlanetB series address the urgent message that there is no alternative planet that we can inhabit if we destroy our Earth. By using iron and other metals, applied to canvas and left to their own devices in the process of oxidation, I have created abstract landscapes of rust and patina. These natural processes of corrosion are symbolic of transience, change and the uncertain future of our planet.

The rust and patina created by oxidation not only reflect destruction, but also open up a space for reflection on climate change, pollution, reckless action, and profit-seeking. They draw attention to the consequences of our actions and what they could mean for the future.

In my work, I use real rust and patina processes to depict authentic signs of decay and address current environmental issues. These works of art, created with the help of nature and the forces of corrosion, are not only abstract landscapes, but also haunting warnings. NoPlanetB reminds us: There is no second planet for us – our future depends on our current actions.

    Sculptures/Mosaic

The sculptures consist of a concrete structure or of stacked stones that are attached to an iron rod anchored in the ground. I work with colored mirror glass, mirror mosaic, mother-of-pearl mosaic, Tiffany glass, glass mosaic, ice-glass mosaic, glass nuggets, ceramic mosaic, broken mosaic and stone mosaic.

The XXL mobilés (in sizes of, for example: 160 x 160 cm, 150 x 110 cm, 120 x 110 cm, 95 x 110 cm, 140 x 60 cm, 105 x 70 cm, 50 x 70 cm, etc.) consist of different colored fluorescent acrylic glass pieces / rings in various shapes that catch the sunlight during the day and reflect the light.

When the sun shines on it, the mobile looks twice as big because the sun projects the shapes onto the wall or floor. The mobile lights up especially on sunny days but also on bad weather days.

The individual parts hang on steel wire and (depending on the model) are connected with vortices or rings to allow flowing movements in all directions. Even a slight wind or air flow sets everything in motion that involves changes in shape and is very beautiful to look at. The mobile is provided with a long nylon cord with a loop and can be hung on any ceiling hook.
